Hurricane Katrina
We all remember the 2005 tragedy that struck the coast of Louisiana, killing thousands and forever changing the lives of countless Americans. This Category 5 hurricane was covered extensively in the news---constant updates on flooding, property damages, lives lost, and other details of the aftermath was continuously discussed and analyzed. What wasn't made quite as clear were the reasons behind how this storm formed, why storms continue to form there, and why the Gulf Coast region is particularly vulnerable to the force of hurricanes.
We will be using this 'pseudoequation' in our analysis of Gulf Coast hurricanes, in order to break down the individual elements of these hazards, and to look at what we can do to better prepare and/or prevent future damages:
HAZARD = RISK x VULNERABILITY/RESILIENCE - MITIGATION
